Urban Water Management Plan
BOARD APPROVES URBAN MANAGEMENT AND SHORTAGE CONTINGENCY PLAN
The Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (MPWMD) prepared its 2025 Urban Water Management Plan (UWMP) and Water Shortage Contingency Plan (WSCP) in compliance with California Water Code Division 6, Part 2.6 and the guidelines established by the California Department of Water Resources.
California law requires urban water suppliers to prepare and adopt an Urban Water Management Plan every five years to promote the efficient use of available water supplies and strengthen local drought planning efforts. As the wholesale urban water supplier of Pure Water Monterey (PWM) water, MPWMD is required to complete and adopt these plans.
The UWMP evaluates long-term water supply reliability under a range of conditions, including normal, single dry-year, and five-year continuous dry-year scenarios. The analysis found that sufficient Pure Water Monterey (PWM) and Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) water supplies are available to meet anticipated water demands through 2050.
The accompanying Water Shortage Contingency Plan outlines actions and response strategies for addressing water shortages, including drought conditions. The WSCP analysis determined that sufficient PWM and ASR water supplies are available to meet anticipated water demand through 2029, assuming a multi-year continuous dry period. The submission deadline for sending the UWMP to the State is July 1, 2026. The UWMP and WSCP are bulleted below.
