As part of its enabling legislation, the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District is charged with identifying and developing water supply projects for the Monterey Peninsula. One of the first projects to come online to assist with replacing the unlawful diversions from the Carmel River, Aquifer Storage and Recovery and its subsequent phases have been providing water since 1998. The Water Management District is responsible for the development of the project and its ongoing operation.
