Provide Update on Water Supply Project and Discuss Options

A.

Present Hydrogeologic Reports on Coastal Dune Aquifer, HDD Well Feasibility, and Local Desalination Project Production Capacity

Summary:  District engineering consultants Camp Dresser & McKee will present findings from two reports that review the results of recent geotechnical (well testing) and geophysical (sonic) studies that better characterize the coastal dune aquifer (Aromas Formation) in the Seaside/Sand City area.  The aquifer characteristics affect the feasibility of using the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) well drilling technology for the seawater intake and brine discharge for the proposed local desalination project.  In turn, the feasibility of HDD affects computer modeling assumptions that predict the maximum production capacity of the desalination project.

B.

Discuss Options for EIR on MPWMD Water Supply Project

Summary:  Based on the results of the hydrogeologic reports, District staff and environmental consultants Jones & Stokes Associates will present options on how to proceed with the EIR on the MPWMD water supply project, including estimates of cost and time for each option.  The EIR is currently in an interim "Board Review Draft" form as directed by the Board on December 15, 2003.
