Monterey Peninsula Water Management District

Public Outreach Committee

October 14, 2009

 

Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 3 PM in the District conference room.

 

Committee members present:                Regina Doyle, Chair

Action Items

1.         Review Draft Text for District Newsletter – Discuss Costs and Production Schedule

            The committee reviewed the draft text.  Directors Doyle and Markey agreed to edit the text, with a goal of simplifying the language and reducing the amount of text.  Their comments will be submitted to Ms. Pintar and Ms. Harris by October 28, 2009, who will prepare final draft text for submission to the committee and the Board in November.  The committee reviewed the newsletter production schedule and agreed to the goal of mailing the newsletter by January 11, 2010.  The committee was in agreement with preliminary cost estimates.

 

Oral Reports/Discussion Items

2.         Review Record of Staff Public Outreach Opportunities

            The committee reviewed the list of community outreach opportunities that staff had participated in, or were scheduled for the future.  Ms. Pintar advised the committee that she and Ms. Harris were working with staff at Del Monte Center to establish drought tolerant plant display gardens.  Four areas have been set aside near Macy’s department store for temporary display gardens. Local landscapers were advised of this opportunity and were asked to submit landscape plans.  The entries will be judged and the four best entries will have the opportunity to install their landscapes by Friday, October 23, 2009. There has been a request that the District contribute funds to purchase the plants.  Ms. Pintar will seek an agreement with Del Monte Center to make these permanent drought tolerant display gardens, with a goal of converting the entire shopping center to drought tolerant landscaping.  The committee briefly discussed how District staff should respond to questions from the public if the Cease and Desist Order is adopted by the State Water Resources Control Board.
