SUMMARY:  In June, staff began preparation of the Sleepy Hollow Steelhead Rearing Facility (SHSRF) for the upcoming 2010 rescue season. During this time, intake pumps were turned on and tested.  Intake pump #2 failed. The moisture control unit in the motor control was on.  This means that moisture had entered the pump seals.  JM Electric was called in to diagnose whether the pump had failed and needed to be removed or an electrical component had failed.  The diagnosis indicated a failed pump.  Intake pump #2 was removed and sent to the pump manufacturer, PACO Pumps, in Hayward.  PACO Pumps inspected the pump and prepared a quote for repairs.  The repair for this pump includes two options:  (1) rebuild the motor or (2) purchase a new motor while retaining the existing impeller (Exhibit 7-A). The rebuild of the motor will include a tungsten carbine lower seal and costs $9,442 plus tax.  Purchasing a new motor, which also includes a tungsten carbine lower seal, costs $10,775 plus tax. Both options carry a 1-year warranty.

Staff plans to select option #1, recondition motor with tungsten carbine lower seal.  Total cost including sales tax (9.75% in Hayward) for this expenditure is $10,345.

RECOMMENDATION:   Staff recommends that the Board approve this expenditure. These funds are within the allocation identified for this purpose in the Fiscal Year 2010-2011 Budget, under line item 2-3-1 G. “Intake/cold well repair & maintenance” for $19,500.
