SUMMARY:  In late July, staff started preparation of the Sleepy Hollow Steelhead Rearing Facility (SHSRF) for the upcoming 2011 Rescue Season. During this time, intake pumps are turned on and tested.  Intake Pump #2 failed.  The moisture control unit in the motor control was flickering on and off.  This meant that either moisture has entered the pump seal or that there is simply moisture in the electrical line.  JM Electric was called in to diagnose whether the pump indeed failed and needed to be removed or if an electrical component had failed.  The diagnosis determined there was moisture in the electrical lines.  JM Electric replaced wires and waterproofed all connections.  Intake Pump #2 continued to fail after replacement of wires. This meant that there was still moisture in the wire going down to the pump.  Staff pulled Intake Pump #2 and replaced it with the back-up pump.  JM Electric then wired and waterproofed all connections on replacement pump. This work was deemed necessary in order to have SHSRF online before fish rescues started, therefore, this was an emergency situation and work was authorized before fish could be brought into the facility.

RECOMMENDATION:   Staff recommends that the Board approve this expenditure. These funds are within the allocation identified for this purpose in the Fiscal Year 2011-2012 Budget, under line item 2-3-1 I, “Intake/cold well repair & maintenance” for $19,500.
