SUMMARY:   California American Water has requested an opportunity to respond to the information provided by WaterPlus at the Board’s July 18, 2011 meeting.  During the July 18, 2011 meeting, WaterPlus proposed that the District purchase the Monterey District of California American Water and provided background information on the rationale, cost, and process for the acquisition.

RECOMMENDATION:  The Board should receive the presentation by the California American Water representatives regarding the information provided in WaterPlus’ proposal that MPWMD purchase Cal-Am, ask questions, allow public comment and questions, and following Board discussion, provide direction to staff.  As a discussion item, no action is required at this time.

BACKGROUND:     On July 18, 2011, WaterPlus presented a proposal to the District Board that the District consider the purchase of the Monterey District of California American Water, an investor owned public utility that is the largest water purveyor in the Monterey Peninsula area. At that time, the Board directed staff to develop a proposal to form an ad-hoc citizens’ committee to analyze the cost of the District acquiring California American Water’s Monterey District.  The Board also indicated that it would allow representatives from California American Water to make a presentation at the August 15, 2011 meeting in response to the information provided in WaterPlus’ presentation.
