April 2011

Total System for Month:  Total California American Water (CAW) system production for April was 1,330 acre-feet (AF), essentially equivalent to the anticipated production of 1,324 AF, as shown on the accompanying table (Exhibit 25-A).

Total System, Water Year to Date:  Total system production for Water Year (WY) 2011 through April 30, 2011 has been 7,239 AF.

Groundwater Production:  During April, 11 AF of water were produced from CAW wells in the Upper Carmel Valley, even though zero AF of production was anticipated.  Lower Carmel Valley (LCV) well production was 840 AF, one percent more than the anticipated production of 832 AF.  In April, 425 AF were produced by CAW from the coastal subareas of the Seaside Basin, six percent less than the 450 AF that was anticipated.  Well production from the Laguna Seca subarea of the Seaside Basin which includes Hidden Hills, Bishop and Ryan Ranch water systems was 29 AF, 71 percent more than the 17 AF that was anticipated.  It should be noted that in April, 363 AF were injected into the Seaside Basin as part of the District’s Phase 1 Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Program in the Seaside Basin.  Although this quantity is included in the 840 AF of LCV well production, it was not produced to meet customer demand.

Surface Water Production:  In April, no water was diverted through the Carmel Valley Filter Plant (CVFP) from San Clemente Reservoir, equivalent to the zero AF of production that was anticipated.  The total diversion through the CVFP for WY 2011 has been zero AF.  Average release to the Carmel River from San Clemente Dam during April was 243 cubic feet per second, as measured at the Sleepy Hollow Weir.

The anticipated river flow, storage and production values were developed jointly by the District, CAW, and the California Department of Fish and Game in consultation with the National Marine Fisheries Service.  CAW and District staff are monitoring reservoir storage, inflow and water quality, and will make additional changes as conditions warrant.  Please refer to Exhibit 25-A for additional information regarding CAW production in April 2011.
