January 2011

Total System for Month:  Total California American Water (CAW) system production for January was 945 acre-feet (AF), 13 percent less than the anticipated production of 1,082 AF, as shown on the accompanying table (Exhibit 22-A).

Total System, Water Year to Date:  Total system production for Water Year (WY) 2011 through January 31, 2011 has been 3,791 AF.

Groundwater Production:  During January, 13 AF of water were produced from CAW wells in the Upper Carmel Valley, even though zero AF of production was anticipated.  Lower Carmel Valley (LCV) well production was 866 AF, 17 percent less than the anticipated production of 1,046 AF.  In January, 17 AF were produced by CAW from the coastal subareas of the Seaside Basin, even though zero AF of production was anticipated.  Well production from the Laguna Seca subarea of the Seaside Basin which includes Hidden Hills, Bishop and Ryan Ranch water systems was 21 AF, 91 percent more than the 11 AF that was anticipated.  It should be noted that the 17 AF of Seaside monthly production includes 4 AF of ASR recovery water from the 1,111 AF that were injected in WY 2010.  Total ASR water recovered for WY 2011 through January 31, 2011 has been 1,110 AF.  In addition, during the month of January, 90 AF were injected into the Seaside Basin as part of the District’s Phase 1 Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Program in the Seaside Basin.  Although this quantity is included in the 866 AF of LCV well production, it was not produced to meet customer demand.

Surface Water Production:  In January, no water was diverted through the Carmel Valley Filter Plant (CVFP) from San Clemente Reservoir, equivalent to the zero AF of production that was anticipated.  The total diversion through the CVFP for WY 2011 has been zero AF.  Average release to the Carmel River from San Clemente Dam during January was 178 cubic feet per second, as measured at the Sleepy Hollow Weir.

The anticipated river flow, storage and production values were developed jointly by the District, CAW, and the California Department of Fish and Game in consultation with the National Marine Fisheries Service.  CAW and District staff are monitoring reservoir storage, inflow and water quality, and will make additional changes as conditions warrant.  Please refer to Exhibit 22-A for additional information regarding CAW production in January 2011.
