SUMMARY:  The cooling tower at the Sleepy Hollow Steelhead Rearing Facility (SHSRF) consists of a three, large motor-driven fan blades inside a large metal box (i.e., the cooling tower).  The fan pulls air up through the bottom of the box and cools the water by evaporation.  The air is discharged through a ~12 foot diameter hole in the top of the box.  This hole has a protective metal screen over it to prevent debris from falling into the tower and possibly damaging the blades or motor.  In addition, the screen acts as a safety barrier for staff while working on top of the cooling tower.  The tower and screen were installed in 2000.  The screen has now failed as a result of the constant moisture and vibration of the operating cooling tower.  Staff removed the screen to prevent further damage to the blades and took it to a metal fabricator for replacement.   Purchase of the debris screen was not budgeted as a line item, but can be covered under the Facility’s general operations and maintenance funds that were approved as part of the District’s Fiscal Year 2008 Budget under Sleepy Hollow Facility Operations.  The detailed cost breakdown for the work to be completed is attached as Exhibit 5-A.

RECOMMENDATION:  Staff recommends that the District Board authorize expenditure of budgeted funds in a not-to-exceed amount of $4,500 for the fabrication and purchase of a replacement debris screen from Advantage Products, Inc, in Monterey, California.

IMPACT TO STAFF/RESOURCES:  The Fiscal Year 2008 Budget includes $41,400 for the General operations and maintenance for the SHSRF, Budget (Item 2-3-1 A).  The cost of the screen, including sales tax is $4,500.  Installation of the screen will require a small amount of fisheries staff time.
