RESOLUTION 2007-07

A Resolution of the Board of Directors

of the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District

RECOGNIZING THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF WATER AWARENESS MONTH,

AND COMMENDING THE WATER AWARENESS COMMITTEE OF MONTEREY COUNTY, INC. FOR ITS SUCCESSFUL EFFORTS IN EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY

WHEREAS, an adequate and reliable supply of high quality water is critical to the health, economy and the quality of life enjoyed by the water users of the Monterey Peninsula; and

WHEREAS, residents and businesses within the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (MPWMD) are largely supplied with water from the Carmel River and the Seaside Basin, both of which are constrained by regulatory restrictions; and

WHEREAS, in a critically-dry year such as water year 2007, there is an increased need to promote and practice water conservation measures to stretch the Monterey Peninsula’s limited supplies; and

WHEREAS, in order to ensure adequate water supplies for all homes and businesses, it is important that the Monterey Peninsula water users follow efficient and water-wise conservation methods to maximize existing water resources; and

WHEREAS, in 1988 the non-profit Water Awareness Committee of Monterey County (WACMC) was formed to promote personal and corporate responsibility through education for the conservation and beneficial use of water in Monterey County; and

WHEREAS, the MPWMD and other public entities and business members of the WACMC bring together many community volunteers and their own resources to:                   1) advance water awareness, conservation and water quality issues; 2) serve as a link between the community and the water industry; 3) provide educational programs and projects on water use and conservation for adults and children; and 4) seek to effect changes in water-use behavior by raising our communities' awareness of water resources and conservation; and

WHEREAS, in observing the 20th annual recognition of May as Water Awareness Month, the state Department of Water Resources has asked local water agencies and other organizations to promote this year’s theme: Use Water Wisely, which calls for special efforts to conserve water, given that most of California experienced rain and snow fall levels far below normal last Winter.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Directors of the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District, in recognizing the 20th anniversary of Water Awareness Month, that the Water Awareness Committee of Monterey County, Inc. is commended for its successful efforts in educating the community on the importance of water conservation, and promoting wise water usage, which is especially vital in this critically-dry year.
